The Integrated Business Major… what is that?

As you may have heard around the college, on Webcourses, or even in your sleep, there is a new major in town. The Integrated Business (IB) major is something of a small cult, a good one, being the 2nd largest major in the entire College of Business. We wear purple almost every Tuesday. We hang out in groups of 5 or 6 to plot our business plan to take over the world, or get an A. We are not those who did not make it into their major, but those who decided to take a different path.
A common misconception throughout the college is, “IB is just for those who weren’t smart enough for their major” or “IB sounds like a medical disease.” Well they are neither. The IB program is a multidisciplinary study of the major aspects of business with a focus on soft skills and personal growth. We are the undergrad MBA program you wish you were a part of, and can be!
IB utilizes a new approach called the flipped classroom approach. No not this picture although that would be an awesome way to teach. The flipped classroom method is one where the students teach what they’ve learned in the out of class modules. This not only promotes a better way to learn, but also gives the students the ability to give presentations in an effective way, a crucial part of everyday business.
Personal Anecdote: Throughout my time in the IB major, I have never encountered and worked with so many different people, and I’ve been in customer service for 8 years. I have made friends and connections that I otherwise wouldn’t have had the opportunity for if I attended a different major (not downplaying other majors, just upplaying mine). Since I have started IB, I have become more involved in the program and my grades have improved from a 2.8 GPA to a solid 3.1 GPA.
The professors are pretty cool too! From Professor Leo’s magic tricks to Dr. Valdez’s unique presentation style to Dr. T’s hip, funky way of showing small business finance, (yes that was a play-off of Mr. T, sue me) there is a place in IB for everyone!
So welcome to IB if you’re already in it! And if you’re not, come join the cult, we have pizza and magic tricks. ⚡️🔛
