The Reason Why

“Change is inevitable, growth is optional.” These words by John C. Maxwell strongly resonate within me, identifying what I believe to be an important key in life. Change, while initially uncomfortable, proves to be the catalyst that ultimately harnesses optimal growth. We currently live in a world in which we are surrounded by change, and are faced with the opportunity to either accept this change, or stubbornly avoid it. Similarly, the College of Business is undergoing changes, and while its mission to successfully prepare students to be “The One” is still the same, the method of action has changed. Personally experiencing this new approach of student engagement inspired me to take action, to be “The One” who not only accepts the changes occurring, but more importantly to be on the forefront of this change; and not just any change, a change that has the power to transform the student body, but also revolutionize the community.

In his book Start With Why, Simon Sinek emphasizes the importance of recognizing the reason why you do what you do. Recently I’ve been reflecting on what I strive for in my professional career, and while yes, it was initially to prosper financially, I’ve come to the realization that I’d much rather create a positive impact in my community and in the long run, leave a transformational legacy. This mindset is what propelled me to join the College of Business Ambassadors, a program comprised of ambitious students motivated to create a positive impact in the College of Business and one that has largely shaped the leader that I am today. It was through my experiences in the program that I learned a valuable lesson, growth is experienced outside of your comfort zone. Upon understanding this truth, I’ve sought out opportunities in which I’m stretched outside of my comfort zone and am convinced having the privilege to serve as an Ambassador was a critical stepping stone in that pursuit. However, it supersedes simply my desires of growth, to a passion for sharing this truth with others and giving them the opportunity to share in this experience of moving outside their comfort zone to experience transformational growth.

Often times we grow complacent and are satisfied with where we currently are, taking away incredible opportunities for growth, and often times all we need is a spark to propel us in the right direction. I believe that spark comes through mentorship, and as such, believe that a greater sense of mentorship is needed in our College. With mentorship comes the opportunity to glean off of the lessons learned by the mentor, who has previously experienced them, and also affords the mentee strategic guidance in order to foster the successful pursuit of their dreams, leading to both parties being transformed. So I ask you, who have you approached to be your mentor, or better yet, who are you mentoring? It just may be the spark you need to jump start your dream.

Ultimately, if you seek growth as an individual, but are equally invested in sharing and creating opportunities for your fellow peers in the College in an effort to maximize their professional growth and development, then the Ambassador program is where you need to be!⚡️🔛
